Hello, everyone! Welcome or welcome back to my blog. I apologize for not being very regular with my updates. It’s just that I have a lot of other things to do right now. Writing and posting these blog posts takes time and I just keep forgetting to do it. Anyways, today I am back with a still-life painting – shoes! I hope you like it.
Still-Life: Shoes
This again is an assignment from my art class. The classes were still online. Our teacher had asked us to paint any pair of footwear we could lay our hands on, and I chose this. I had worn this pair on my trip to Europe and had walked the cities of Munich, Vienna, and Budapest. We had walked a lot on that trip and I remembered these shoes to be extremely comfortable, that’s why I had no difficulty choosing it for my painting.
As you can see, this painting is pretty minimalistic for a still-life and is centered around the pair of shoes. For some variation, I inserted a sock in one of them, and left half of it hanging out. I also decided to show the shoelaces, instead of tucking them in. I first created a basic sketch of the shoes and the sock, and then used my judgment for create its final boundaries and color them in. Green is one of my favorite colors to work with you can see how good the shading looks. I assure you, the painting looks much better in-person, than in the image.
For the background and foreground, I used an unconventional combination of black and white. Usually, they are painted using different shades of a single color other than these two, and are rarely ever left blank. Again, I find black and white very easy to work with while painting large portions of the paper, and the result is relatively better than when I have used other colors.
I had not drawn any lines to guide me for the details I painted on the shoes. I just used a free-hand. For the final touches, I used white color-pencils to highlight the areas receiving the most light, including the metal rings through which the shoelaces pass. I used black color-pencils to further darken the places with less light, especially in the shadow region. Finally, I used a few different colored-pencils to improve the shading and color transition in different areas.
