When Dorothy regains consciousness, she finds herself in a strange land. It is the Land of the Munchkins. There, she meets the Good Witch of the North, who tells her that if she wants to go back home, she must travel to Emerald City. In Emerald City, lives the Wizard of Oz, and he is the only one who can tell her how she is to get back home.
Before I begin, let me tell you, that the following review may seem a little confusing, or vague. In my defense, it is just the complexity of the story that makes it so. There are a lot of characters, each one playing an important part.
Ten different people – ten complete, apparently random strangers – have received different letters. Some from old friends or acquaintances, or some as business propositions. But all containing the same address, and an invitation to come to soldier island. Therefore, Justice Wargrave, Vera Claythorne, Philip Lombard, Miss Emily Brent, General Macarthur, Dr. Armstrong, Anthony Marston, and Mr. Blore set off for their host’s house, on Soldier Island.
An old army general, a troop of injured soldiers, a group of nurses, an old priest, and a two-and-a-half-year-old child, climb aboard The Kerry Dancer. A curious and surprisingly random collection humans, with age differences of decades, yes, but all with the same objective – flee Singapore before dawn breaks.
