Four sleuths, four murderers, and a Mephistopheles at a party. Dinner is served. They get up and move into an adjacent room. The four murderers divide themselves into two pairs and play bridge together. The four sleuths do the same, in a smaller adjacent room where the second bridge table has been set up. The Mephistopheles decides to take a nap on a chair in front of the fire. A simple game of bridge turns dangerous, and the Mephistopheles is killed.
He believes that civilization will continue to advance till it reaches perfection and ultimately destroy itself. He is not very much off the mark when he arrives in the future and he discovers that society, as he knew it, has fallen into ruins, literally and metaphorically.
They sink one U-Boat only to find another on their tail again. The first condor went down, but they just discovered another one keeping an eye on them. Just as one saboteur is apprehended, another is discovered.
The case was as obscure as ever, save one factor. The only thing that tied all three murders together, was the complete lack of any motive.
When Dorothy regains consciousness, she finds herself in a strange land. It is the Land of the Munchkins. There, she meets the Good Witch of the North, who tells her that if she wants to go back home, she must travel to Emerald City. In Emerald City, lives the Wizard of Oz, and he is the only one who can tell her how she is to get back home.
Before I begin, let me tell you, that the following review may seem a little confusing, or vague. In my defense, it is just the complexity of the story that makes it so. There are a lot of characters, each one playing an important part.
