King Solomon’s Mines

Hello everyone! Welcome or welcome back to my blog. Today I am back with another book review, King Solomon’s Mines. I hope you have read and enjoyed all of my previous posts and if not please do check them out, too. Today I have chosen for my book review another classic that I enjoyed a lot while reading it and wanted to bring a summary about it to you. So, here we go:

About the Author:

Sir Henry Rider Haggard was an English writer. He was best known for his adventure novels set in exotic locations, predominantly Africa. He was one of the best-selling novelists of the nineteenth century and his stories continue to be popular and influential to this day and age.

Sir Haggard wrote over fifty novels. He was made a Knight Bachelor in 1912 and a King Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1919. The locality of Rider, in British Columbia, was named in his memory.

King Solomon’s Mines:

King Solomon’s mines was the novel that gave Haggard his big break, or so to say. He had written this novel within six weeks under the pressure of a bet. And surprisingly he had almost sold it to a publisher for the meagre sum of 500 pounds. In the last moment, he insisted for 10% royalties, which set him up for life. Many consider this novel as the first of the Lost World genre. It has inspired dozens of other best-selling adventure stories such as Edgar Rice Burrough’s Tarzan series and the Indiana Jones movies.

The Kings Solomon’s Mines is an evergreen classic which tells the story of the adventures of three men- Allan Quatermain, Sir Henry Curtis, and Captain John Good, who go on a rescue mission to find Sir Henry Curtis’ brother, Neville. Neville has last known to have gone in search of King Solomon’s Mines in search of its fabled diamonds. They retrace the steps of Neville, which takes them through many dangers, adventures and evil intentions.

This is not your usual classic, the very word of which screams boredom in the minds of teenagers and adults alike. This book is just an adventure thriller movie, but set in pen and paper. The language is clear and very easy to understand. Haggard has weaved a tale of fantasy and adventure around the search of a man lost for two years. He has portrayed the exotic land of Africa as a dangerous and exciting place. There are places in the story where the superiority of us civilized folk manifests itself. However, the honor and benevolence of the tribal people is brought forth throughout the book.

This book will prove to be a very interesting read for people of all ages right from children to teenagers to old men. This book omits most of the more boring details, descriptions and observations found in other novels. The book is an absolute thriller. Plus, the story teaches us one very important lesson, which is to try till we succeed. So I would definitely recommend you to read it.
